Milton Keynes Facebook group aids thousands of women

September 25, 2026 3 min read MKLBD Newsroom via MKFM

A Milton Keynes-based online community, Misadventures in Motherhood and Friendships, has grown significantly since its inception eight years ago. Initially established as a small forum for women to discuss the realities of parenting, friendships, and daily life, the group now boasts a membership close to 17,000 individuals.

Community Support Network

The platform serves as a vital support network for thousands of women across the region. Members have a proven track record of rallying to assist those facing difficulties. This assistance has often been financial or emotional, addressing needs during challenging circumstances.

Support provided by the group has ranged from essential items like food and baby supplies to clothing and Christmas gifts. Members also offer practical advice and help with formal communication, such as drafting important emails for those who feel overwhelmed or unsure of where to turn.

Founder Kayla Neal established the Facebook group in 2019. Her primary motivation was to combat loneliness experienced as a new mother following the birth of her first child. She identified a significant need and a personal drive to contribute to helping others.

The group’s positive influence extends to its members. Neal noted that participating in the group not only boosted her own confidence and mental well-being during a period of significant life change but also provided a valuable resource for countless other women over the years.

Beyond Social Media Negativity

In an era often characterised by criticism of social media platforms, Misadventures in Motherhood and Friendships demonstrates the potential for positive community building online. The group’s actions highlight how these digital spaces can foster genuine connection and mutual aid.

The community’s responsiveness is a key feature, with members quickly mobilising when a genuine need is identified. This swift action has been evident in various initiatives throughout the year.

A notable annual event is the organisation of community giving drives for Christmas. These efforts focus on collecting and distributing presents to children and families who might otherwise receive very little during the festive season.

Beyond organised events, the group has supported numerous causes brought forward by members or even strangers. One instance involved a fundraising effort for wheelchairs, initiated in memory of a woman’s late wife. The group readily offered its support to this cause.

Local Impact and Resourcefulness

Members have collectively contributed to a wide array of practical needs. These include assisting with house cleaning, furnishing properties, and clearing homes. The group also serves as a space for celebrating members’ birthdays and milestones.

Currently, an informal baby bank operates within the group. Members donate pre-loved baby clothes and essential items, which are then distributed by Neal to families in need. This initiative promotes recycling, helping to prevent items from going to landfill while simultaneously supporting those with limited financial resources.

Neal described her living room being transformed into a Christmas grotto, preparing hampers with new and second-hand items. The aim is to bring joy and reduce stress for families facing financial hardship during the holiday period.

What distinguishes this initiative is its grassroots nature. It operates without the infrastructure of large charities, such as paid staff, offices, or substantial budgets. Instead, it relies on the collective will of ordinary women within the online community to actively help others when a need arises.

Kayla Neal also shares updates and insights from the group’s activities via her TikTok account.
