Milton Keynes schools offer free child flu jabs

September 25, 2026 2 min read MKLBD Newsroom via MKFM

Free seasonal flu vaccinations are being made available to children across Milton Keynes. The programme aims to protect young people and the wider community from the effects of influenza.

School-based vaccinations

Children attending schools in Milton Keynes, specifically those from Reception class through to Year 11, are eligible for a free flu vaccination. This initiative is delivered directly within school settings to ensure accessibility for pupils.

The vaccination is offered to help prevent children from experiencing illness due to flu. Furthermore, it plays a crucial role in reducing the transmission of the virus to others, including family members and friends who may be more susceptible to severe illness.

Additional vaccination routes

For younger children, specifically those aged two or three years old as of 31 August 2026, flu vaccinations can be obtained through local GP practices. Additionally, children aged six months and older who have an underlying health condition or a weakened immune system are also eligible for vaccination at GP surgeries.

From October 1, participating pharmacies in Milton Keynes will begin offering flu vaccinations. This service extends to two and three-year-olds. Pharmacies will also be providing vaccinations to children aged two to 17 years who fall into a clinical risk group.

Vaccine types and options

For most children aged two and above, the flu immunisation is administered as a nasal spray. However, an injectable alternative is available for those who cannot receive the nasal spray for any reason.

Children under the age of two will receive the vaccination via injection. The injectable vaccine is formulated without porcine gelatine, offering an option for parents who have religious, cultural, or personal preferences against using the nasal spray.

Importance of community protection

Councillor Donna Fuller highlighted the importance of the vaccine in keeping children healthy and enabling them to benefit fully from their time at school. She emphasised its role in preventing children from falling ill and limiting the spread of flu to more vulnerable individuals.

Marimba Carr, Deputy Director of Public Health for Milton Keynes, encouraged parents and carers to accept the vaccination offer when communicated by schools. She stated that vaccination is a proven method for safeguarding children against flu and preventing serious illness, while also contributing to broader community protection.
