MK-ACT seeks community support for vital services

Milton Keynes residents are being encouraged to support MK-ACT, a charity dedicated to assisting individuals experiencing domestic abuse. October is recognised annually as Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, a period focused on raising awareness, dispelling misconceptions, and highlighting available support networks. MK-ACT provides a comprehensive suite of services designed to protect and empower those affected by domestic abuse within the Milton Keynes area.

Campaign to amplify support during October

The organisation is participating in the Big Give Women and Girls Match Fund campaign, which runs from 6th to 13th October. This initiative offers a significant opportunity for donations to have a doubled impact. For every pound donated during this specific week, a matching contribution from the fund will be applied, effectively doubling the financial support available to MK-ACT’s programmes at no extra cost to the donor.

This campaign is particularly crucial given the scale of the challenge. Domestic abuse statistics indicate that one in four women and one in six men will face such experiences during their lives. This reality underscores the widespread nature of the issue and the necessity for robust local support systems.

Comprehensive support for Milton Keynes residents

MK-ACT offers immediate assistance through its Crisis Intervention Service. Here, initial contact leads to a thorough risk assessment and the development of a personalised safety plan. This plan can integrate specialist services provided directly by MK-ACT alongside support from various partner organisations throughout Milton Keynes.

The charity also operates a safe house, known as the Refuge, which provides secure accommodation for women and children fleeing abusive situations. This facility can accommodate up to 28 families. However, the Refuge consistently operates at full capacity, with a waiting list reflecting the ongoing demand.

To address this critical need, MK-ACT is actively working towards establishing a second Refuge. The goal is to double the number of available flats by the end of the current decade, a necessary expansion to meet the increasing needs of Milton Keynes’s growing population.

Beyond immediate safety, MK-ACT runs Fresh Start, a programme specifically designed to address abusive behaviours at their root. This initiative aims to reduce the occurrence of repeat offenses and prevent future instances of domestic abuse.

Measuring the impact of MK-ACT’s work

The overarching objective of MK-ACT’s services is to minimise harm by connecting individuals with the most suitable support for their unique circumstances. The charity reports significant success in its mission.

Following engagement with MK-ACT’s services, a remarkable 92% of clients report feeling a greater sense of control over their lives. Furthermore, 96% of individuals state that the charity provided access to support they would not have discovered independently.

Reaching the diverse and extensive population of Milton Keynes, a city with approximately 300,000 residents, presents a considerable undertaking for the charity. MK-ACT currently employs around 30 staff members, many of whom work part-time, and relies on a dedicated team of approximately 25 volunteers.

The organisation collaborates closely with MK City Council. Together, they have developed specialised training programmes for professionals across various sectors. This training equips practitioners with the skills to identify signs of domestic abuse, assess risk levels for individuals and families, and implement appropriate safeguarding measures.

The substantial achievements of MK-ACT, given its available resources, are a testament to its effectiveness. The continuation of these essential, often life-saving, services is made possible by the generosity of the Milton Keynes community.

During Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, MK-ACT urges residents to contribute to their cause by donating through the Big Give’s Women and Girls Match campaign page between 6th and 13th October. This period offers a unique opportunity to amplify the impact of every donation, directly supporting those in Milton Keynes affected by domestic abuse as they seek safety and begin to rebuild their lives.
