New data reveals that five-year-olds in Milton Keynes are excelling in their readiness for primary school, surpassing national averages.

Early Years Development Success

In Milton Keynes, a significant 76.4% of five-year-olds have achieved a ‘Good Level of Development’. This benchmark assesses 12 key learning objectives, covering areas crucial for school entry such as communication, language, literacy, mathematics, physical development, and social and emotional skills. Teachers conduct these assessments at the close of the Reception year.

This figure stands considerably higher than the UK’s national average, which is reported at 68.3%. Furthermore, Milton Keynes has already surpassed a government target for 2028, which aimed for 75% of five-year-olds to reach this developmental milestone.

Council’s Early Years Programme

The Milton Keynes City Council actively supports early years development through a dedicated programme. This initiative involves close collaboration with local nurseries, pre-schools, and registered childminders.

The aim is to foster essential skills in young children, ensuring they are well-equipped for the transition into formal education. This focus on preparation contributes to children’s ability to adapt to new school routines, boosts their confidence, and enhances social interaction.

Benefits for Milton Keynes Schools

The positive impact of this early preparation is evident in local schools. Reports from the previous year indicated that primary school children in Milton Keynes experienced fewer absences compared to neighbouring areas. This improved attendance is often linked to children feeling more engaged and confident due to their solid foundational skills.

Children who attend school more regularly are generally more likely to meet expected academic standards in core subjects like reading, writing, and mathematics.
