Businesses operating within Milton Keynes City Centre convened at Hotel La Tour on Monday.
The gathering marked the official launch of the MyMilton Keynes Business Improvement District’s (BID) Business Plan, covering the period from 2027 to 2032.
This event also signified the commencement of the BID’s formal process to secure a third consecutive five-year term of operation.
Attendees included businesses that contribute levies, alongside partners, stakeholders, and local authority representatives.
The meeting served as an opportunity to review achievements resulting from a decade of joint investment in the city centre.
It also focused on future prospects and strategic ambitions for the area.
MyMilton Keynes BID Chair Diane Wehrle welcomed guests to the event.
Chief Executive Jill Farnsworth presented the organisation’s newly developed Business Plan, titled ‘Milton Keynes City Centre: Investing Together 2027-2032’.
A short film was premiered during the event.
This film featured members of the BID team, Board directors, and local business owners.
It aimed to demonstrate the tangible impact of collective investment and the BID’s role in fostering the success of Milton Keynes City Centre.
Displays were available for guests to examine.
These showcased the BID’s activities over the past ten years.
Work highlighted included improvements to public spaces, efforts to enhance city centre security, marketing initiatives for the ‘My-MK’ brand, business engagement programmes, accessibility projects, and collaborative ventures.
Future Investment Commitments
Under the proposed Business Plan, MyMilton Keynes BID has committed to directing over £9 million into the city centre.
This significant investment is planned over the next five years and will be channelled through four key strategic priorities.
These commitments include ongoing funding for city centre security patrols, which provide a visible presence and reassurance to businesses and visitors.
Further investment is earmarked for environmental enhancements, aiming to improve the overall aesthetic and appeal of the urban landscape.
Festive lighting schemes are also set to continue, contributing to the seasonal atmosphere and encouraging footfall during key periods.
Development of the ‘My-MK City Centre’ brand and associated marketing activities will be a priority.
This aims to further promote Milton Keynes as a vibrant destination for shopping, leisure, and business.
Support for new events and experiences is planned, designed to attract visitors and create a dynamic city centre environment.
Strategic projects will be undertaken to help local businesses capitalise on future growth opportunities.
These initiatives will focus on adaptability and innovation within the commercial sector.
Furthermore, the BID will continue to foster initiatives that enable businesses to connect, collaborate, and collectively influence decision-making processes.
BID’s Role and Renewal Process
Diane Wehrle, Chair of MyMilton Keynes BID, commented on the BID’s established presence.
She noted that for nearly a decade, businesses have pooled resources through the BID to strengthen the city centre.
Wehrle highlighted that many current benefits, including specific projects, services, and partnerships, would not exist without the BID’s intervention.
The Board expressed confidence in the BID’s continuing importance.
They are supporting a Business Plan that builds upon past successes while preparing the city centre for evolving challenges and opportunities.
Jill Farnsworth, Chief Executive of MyMilton Keynes BID, shared her perspective on the city’s trajectory.
She stated that Milton Keynes is entering a particularly dynamic phase in its history.
Farnsworth emphasised the need to maintain valued services while ensuring the city centre is well-prepared for future developments.
The plan aims to ensure businesses have a robust platform for their voices to be heard.
It also seeks to ensure they can benefit from emerging opportunities and achieve greater collective success.
The launch event was an occasion to acknowledge progress made and, crucially, to look towards the future.
The complete Business Plan is accessible online via the MyMilton Keynes website.
A formal ballot for the renewal of MyMilton Keynes BID is scheduled to take place.
This ballot will run from 25 September to 22 October 2026.
For the renewal proposal to be successful, it must secure a majority of the votes cast.
Additionally, it requires a majority representation of the total rateable value held by those participating in the vote.
