Milton Keynes Council backs Bletchley regeneration plan

Milton Keynes City Council is poised to formally adopt a new Action Plan aimed at revitalising Bletchley and Fenny Stratford. This plan outlines the strategy for implementing the Bletchley and Fenny Stratford 2050 Vision over the upcoming years.

Guiding Future Investment

The Action Plan will serve as a roadmap for future investment, regeneration efforts, and collaborative initiatives throughout the Bletchley area. Its development stemmed from extensive consultations with local residents, businesses, and various community organisations.

The vision prioritises enhancing Bletchley’s existing strengths. It seeks to foster a more dynamic town centre environment, provide robust support for local enterprises, and capitalise on emerging opportunities for growth and development.

Key Regeneration Projects

Specific areas targeted for improvement include Queensway, the future redevelopment of the Brunel Centre site, and enhancements around Aylesbury Street and the location of the former fire station. The plan also aims to encourage the establishment of more independent businesses, diverse cafés, and accessible community spaces.

Work on Queensway is already in progress, funded by the Towns Fund programme. These improvements focus on creating safer pedestrian routes, eliminating pavement parking, and increasing available parking, including dedicated disabled bays. The aim is to make the area more appealing for both residents and visitors.

The council is also advancing plans for the demolition of the Brunel Centre and the adjacent former Wilko building. This prepares the ground for future redevelopment, intended to attract new investment and inject vitality into the heart of Bletchley.

Enhanced Station Access

Significant progress has been made regarding Bletchley Railway Station. Earlier this year, the government confirmed a £17 million contribution towards constructing a new eastern entrance. This development follows a sustained campaign by local stakeholders and the City Council for improved station accessibility.

The proposed new entrance will offer direct access from the town centre side of the station. This is expected to drive more footfall to local shops, businesses, and attractions, thereby reinforcing Bletchley’s role as a crucial transport hub within Milton Keynes.

Cabinet Member for the Town Deal, Cllr Ed Hume, highlighted the plan’s significance. He stated that the Action Plan translates the Bletchley and Fenny Stratford 2050 Vision into concrete actions, providing a structure for development.

Cllr Hume further noted that progress is already visible, citing the ongoing improvements on Queensway, the forthcoming redevelopment of the Brunel Centre site, and the planned new eastern entrance at Bletchley Station. He emphasised the importance of continued collaboration with local partners, businesses, and the community.

This collaborative approach, he believes, is key to cultivating a thriving town centre that is well-connected and attractive for the future. It also aims to preserve the unique character and heritage that define Bletchley and Fenny Stratford.

A final decision on the adoption of the Action Plan is scheduled for the upcoming week.
