Vape Battery Dangers Highlighted
Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service has issued a crucial safety alert to residents across the Milton Keynes area regarding the disposal of lithium-ion batteries. This warning follows a series of waste fires reported nationwide during the summer months.
Risks in Everyday Electronics
Fire experts at the service highlight that lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in devices like mobile phones, laptops, and increasingly in disposable vapes, present a significant fire hazard if not disposed of correctly. These batteries power many modern conveniences used daily by people in areas such as Bletchley and Wolverton.
When items containing these batteries are placed in general waste or recycling bins, they are susceptible to damage. The crushing or puncturing that occurs during waste collection and processing can trigger the battery to overheat. This can lead to a dangerous chain reaction known as thermal runaway, producing intense heat, flames, and flammable gases.
Protecting Waste Workers and Services
The consequences of improper disposal can be severe. Fires can rapidly spread through bin lorries, waste transfer stations, and recycling facilities. This not only endangers the lives of waste management workers but also disrupts essential local services and causes considerable environmental harm.
Alex Mason, Prevention Lead at Bucks Fire & Rescue, emphasised the preventable nature of many such incidents. He noted that seemingly harmless discarded batteries can become extremely dangerous during the waste handling process.
By adopting simple, correct recycling practices for batteries, vapes, and other electrical items, residents can play a vital role in safeguarding waste workers, preventing fires, and minimising environmental risks throughout Milton Keynes.
Many individuals remain unaware that both disposable and rechargeable vapes contain these powerful lithium-ion batteries and electronic components. Consequently, used vapes should never be discarded in household bins or standard recycling containers.
Instead, residents are urged to seek out approved collection points specifically designated for vape, battery, or electrical item recycling. These facilities ensure safe and responsible disposal, mitigating the fire risks associated with these common electronic devices.
