Milton Keynes groups can apply for green project funding

September 3, 2026 2 min read MKLBD Newsroom via www.milton-keynes.gov.uk

Local organisations in Milton Keynes can now apply for grants to help them reduce their carbon emissions and energy expenses. The Milton Keynes City Council’s Carbon Offset Fund is open for applications.

Funding for sustainability initiatives

Charities, schools, town and parish councils, and other public or not-for-profit groups are eligible to receive financial support. The grants can be used for various improvements aimed at increasing energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

These improvements include the installation of solar panels, heat pumps, better insulation, and energy-saving lighting systems. The scheme provides a valuable opportunity for these organisations to make their buildings greener.

Support for community projects

The current application window remains open until 5 October 2026. This extended period allows ample time for groups to develop and submit proposals for projects that will yield lasting environmental advantages. It also offers a chance to lower ongoing operational costs.

Since its inception, the Carbon Offset Fund has supported 31 projects across the Milton Keynes area. A total of nearly £2.9 million has been distributed to assist local organisations in reducing their carbon footprint and enhancing building sustainability.

One example of a funded project is the Lovat Hall at Newport Pagnell Baptist Church. This received support for a significant redevelopment focused on energy efficiency. The upgrades included an air source heat pump and improved insulation, ensuring the building remains a vital hub for over 30 community groups while minimising its environmental impact.

The fund is financed through Section 106 contributions, which are payments made by property developers. These contributions are specifically earmarked for environmental offset initiatives within the community.

Organisations can apply for grants of up to £30,000. A key requirement is that applicants must provide at least 50% of the project cost as match funding. All submissions will be evaluated after the closing date, with successful projects chosen through a competitive assessment process.
