Milton Keynes landmarks shine gold for charity

Landmarks Illuminate for Local Cause

Buildings across Milton Keynes were bathed in a golden light on two recent dates, September 1 and September 30. This striking visual tribute aimed to show solidarity with local families facing childhood cancer.

The displays were organised in memory of Henry Allen, a young local boy who passed away at the age of four. Henry was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma.

These golden illuminations served as a clear message of support. They were intended to reach children, teenagers, young adults, and their families in Milton Keynes who are currently undergoing cancer treatment.

The message conveyed was simple yet profound: no one battling cancer in the area is alone in their fight.

Henry Allen Trust Launches Christmas Appeal

Following this display of community spirit, the Milton Keynes-based charity, The Henry Allen Trust, is now focusing on its significant annual Christmas initiative. This year marks the 12th Annual Christmas Stocking Appeal.

The Henry Allen Trust provides comprehensive support to families throughout their entire journey with childhood cancer. This includes care during active treatment, the period after treatment concludes, palliative care, and support during bereavement.

Among its key local services is ‘Henry’s Helping Hands’. This initiative provides essential, nutritious food packages to parents and carers who face sudden or extended hospital stays by their child’s bedside.

The charity also offers dedicated therapy sessions. These are designed to support the emotional and mental well-being of young patients, their siblings, and their parents.

Activities such as entertainment on hospital wards, toy hampers, and family fun days are organised to boost morale during challenging times.

Crucially, the Trust offers compassionate support and memory-making opportunities for families who lose a child.

How Milton Keynes Can Contribute

Every December, the charity’s volunteers, known as ‘Team Henry’, visit children’s hospital wards across the region. They personally deliver packed stockings and gifts directly to the bedsides of young patients who are spending the festive season in medical care.

Residents, schools, and businesses in Milton Keynes are encouraged to get involved with the current appeal. Two donation drop-off points are already established for brand-new, unwrapped toys and gifts.

These locations are David Lloyd Milton Keynes and The Navigation pub in Cosgrove. More collection points throughout the city are expected to be announced soon.

Organisations such as workplaces, schools, clubs, gyms, and places of worship are invited to set up their own festive collection boxes. Alternatively, they can organise a ‘Selection Box Donation Day’.

For those who prefer to donate online, the Trust has an Amazon Wish List. Items can be purchased directly and sent to Team Henry.

Beyond physical donations, The Henry Allen Trust is seeking volunteers to contribute their time. The charity encourages people to participate in fundraising events like runs, cycles, or marathons, with details available on their Run For Charity page.

To acknowledge the dedication of volunteers, Team Henry has introduced collectible iron-on recognition patches. These are awarded based on the number of events supported.

Individuals interested in joining the volunteer team can contact The Henry Allen Trust directly via their social media channels on Facebook, Instagram, and X, where they are active as @TheHenryAllenTrust.
