Milton Keynes City Council has collaborated with the NHS to introduce a new online resource designed to help older residents stay independent and reduce the risk of falls.

Preventing falls in Milton Keynes

Each year, approximately 900 residents in Milton Keynes aged 65 and above are hospitalised due to falls. Research indicates that after a fracture, only about a quarter of older individuals are able to fully recover their previous mobility and independence. This can lead to diminished confidence, increased feelings of isolation, and difficulties with daily activities.

However, many falls are preventable through appropriate guidance, support, and timely interventions.

‘Steady On Your Feet’ website

The new website, named ‘Steady On Your Feet’, consolidates reliable advice, practical tips, and information on local services into a single, accessible platform. It is intended for use by older adults, their families, and caregivers.

Users can complete a straightforward online self-assessment. This generates a personalised action plan to help identify strategies for lowering fall risk and enhancing confidence.

Resources for residents

The site offers practical information covering various aspects of fall prevention. This includes advice on remaining active, improving balance and strength, and making homes safer. It also addresses common reasons for falls, such as dizziness, medication side effects, and changes in memory.

Additionally, residents can find details about support services available within the Milton Keynes area.
