Milton Keynes tops South East green rankings

A recent study by CoworkingCafe has identified Milton Keynes as the greenest city in the South East of England.

The research analysed 94 urban areas across the UK, assessing nine key sustainability metrics to determine which cities are most committed to greener living.

Key sustainability metrics

These metrics included carbon emissions per person, air quality levels, and household recycling rates. The density of solar panel installations on rooftops and the availability of green spaces were also considered.

The study also factored in the availability of full-fibre broadband, recognised as a digital foundation for smart energy and waste management systems that reduce consumption and emissions.

Local green credentials highlighted

Milton Keynes achieved a high national ranking due to significant uptake of eco-friendly vehicles. Two out of every five cars registered in the city are either hybrid or electric, placing it fourth nationally for this metric.

The city’s performance places it ahead of other South East cities such as Reading, which ranked eighth, and Brighton and Hove, which came in twentieth. Oxford was ranked thirty-first.

Milton Keynes also outperformed nearby towns including Bedford (72nd), Northampton (87th), and Aylesbury (89th).
