Law enforcement in Milton Keynes has issued updated guidance for motorcycle owners due to a recent increase in thefts across the area. The advice aims to help riders protect their vehicles.
Simple Security Measures
Police recommend several straightforward precautions that can significantly lower the risk of a motorcycle being stolen. These include using robust security devices such as quality chains, disc locks, or ground anchors.
When parking, it is advised to secure the motorcycle to a fixed object. This makes it more difficult for thieves to move the bike.
Additional layers of security are also suggested. Fitting an approved tracker, alarm, or immobiliser can deter criminals. Parking in well-lit and busy locations, or in designated secure parking areas, further enhances safety.
Deterrence and Vigilance
The use of a motorcycle cover to obscure the make and model of the bike is another tactic suggested by police. Owners should also ensure keys are never left in the ignition, and engines should not be left running unattended.
For motorcycles equipped with keyless technology, police advise keeping keys in a signal-blocking pouch when not in use to prevent remote theft.
Maintaining a record of the motorcycle’s registration, VIN, and frame numbers, along with recent photographs, is also important for identification purposes.
Reporting Suspicious Activity
Residents are urged to report any suspicious behaviour they witness. This includes individuals interfering with motorcycles, loitering suspiciously around parking areas, or loading a motorcycle into a vehicle under unusual circumstances.
Suspicious activity can be reported to the police by calling 101 or through the online reporting portal. If a crime is in progress, the emergency number 999 should be called immediately.
