School-based flu vaccinations return to Milton Keynes

Young people across Milton Keynes are being encouraged to receive their seasonal flu vaccinations, with schools continuing to provide this service. Children from Reception class up to Year 11 are eligible for a free nasal spray vaccine at their educational setting.

This initiative aims to protect children from unpleasant flu symptoms, which can sometimes develop into more serious health issues. The vaccinations also play a crucial role in preventing the wider spread of the virus to more vulnerable individuals within the community, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with existing health conditions.

Expanded vaccination options available

Beyond the school program, local GP practices are offering flu vaccinations to children aged two and three years old as of 31 August 2026. They are also providing the vaccine to children aged six months and over who fall into a clinical risk group.

Starting from October 1st, participating pharmacies in Milton Keynes will also offer flu vaccinations. These pharmacies can vaccinate two and three-year-olds. Additionally, they can administer the vaccine to children aged two to 17 who are part of a clinical risk group.

Vaccine delivery methods

For most children aged two and above, the flu immunisation is administered as a nasal spray. An alternative injectable vaccine is available for those who cannot receive the nasal spray for any reason.

Infants under two years old will receive the vaccination via injection. The injectable vaccine is also an option for parents who have religious, cultural, or personal preferences against the nasal spray, as it does not contain porcine gelatine.
