Bereaved Military Families Gain Free Rail Travel

For the first time, close relatives of service personnel who died during their military careers can claim free travel on National Rail services. This initiative is specifically for Remembrance weekend, taking place on November 7th and 8th.

The scheme aims to support families in attending memorial services and commemorative events. These events honour those who lost their lives while serving in the Armed Forces.

This new offer builds upon existing provisions for free rail travel already available to serving military personnel and veterans. The intention is to alleviate financial burdens, ensuring that travel costs do not prevent families from participating in national acts of remembrance.

Application and Support

Eligible family members interested in using this free travel offer must apply by October 16th. Applications are processed through the Defence Medical Welfare Service.

Rail Minister Lord Hendy stated that Remembrance Weekend is a time for national reflection on the sacrifices made by service members. He highlighted that bereaved families are central to these commemorations.

Lord Hendy added that the cost of travel should not be a barrier for these families wishing to remember their loved ones. Extending free travel to next of kin is intended to enable more families to attend events.

Minister for Veterans and People, Calvin Bailey, commented on Remembrance as a national opportunity to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces. He noted that for bereaved families, this period is deeply personal.

Mr. Bailey emphasised the importance of remembering that each name on a memorial represents a family whose lives have been profoundly impacted. He believes free rail travel will assist bereaved relatives in gathering to honour their loved ones without financial constraints.

Charity Support and Local Context

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has welcomed the Department for Transport’s decision. They see this as a significant step in supporting military families during Remembrance.

The charity stated that this change ensures those who have lost loved ones in service can travel to pay their respects without financial strain. SSAFA views it as a meaningful gesture that honours the sacrifices made by Forces families.

For residents in Milton Keynes, the extended rail offer means that families with connections to the Armed Forces, whether through current service, veteran status, or past sacrifice, can more easily access remembrance events across the country. This is particularly relevant given Milton Keynes’ ongoing commitment to supporting its veteran community and acknowledging national commemorative dates.

The ability to travel freely allows families to connect with communities and other veterans, fostering a shared sense of honour and remembrance. This initiative underscores the nation’s commitment to acknowledging the full impact of military service on families.
