New music initiatives launch for MK youth

Young people in Milton Keynes are being offered new creative outlets through a partnership focused on music and DJing. Milton Keynes City Council has teamed up with Bucks-based organisation On the Decks.

This collaboration began earlier this year. It aims to provide local children and young people with hands-on experience. These opportunities are centred around DJing and music production.

On the Decks has been running free sessions at City Council Family Centres. These sessions have already given hundreds of young people the chance to use professional DJ equipment. Experienced tutors provide support throughout the activities.

The programmes combine DJing techniques with creative challenges. They also include music-based activities. These elements help young people develop new skills. They also aim to build confidence and provide avenues for self-expression through music.

Accessibility is a key focus of these sessions. Children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) can participate. Activities are adapted to individual needs. They can be broken down into manageable steps.

The visual and practical nature of DJing offers diverse engagement methods. Participants can interact through sound, movement, technology, and creativity. This approach supports different learning styles and preferences.

Expanding access across Milton Keynes

Currently, On the Decks operates free weekly after-school clubs. These clubs are hosted at three City Council Family Centres: Saplings, Hedgerows, and Hummingbird.

Future plans include extending these offerings. Assemblies, workshops, and music production programmes are being considered for schools throughout Milton Keynes.

On the Decks is recognised by the city council. It holds accreditation as a ‘Safe Practice Mark’ organisation. This demonstrates adherence to safety and quality standards.

Councillor Peter Cannon, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, highlighted the benefits. He noted music’s power for self-expression and building confidence. He also praised the adaptation of sessions for young people with additional needs.

Will Hardisty, Owner and CEO of On the Decks, commented on the partnership. He described it as a valuable opportunity. It allows for modern music education and DJing to be brought directly into local communities.

He acknowledged the support from the team at “Noise” for their role in the sessions. Hardisty mentioned that the programmes help build confidence and creative expression, particularly for those finding traditional settings challenging.

Upcoming student showcase event

An upcoming event will showcase student talent. On the Decks is hosting a student showcase on September 20. The venue is Unit Nine in Wolverton.

Students from the programme will perform at the showcase. The event will also feature open-deck sessions. These sessions allow children and young people to try DJing themselves, with tutor support.

Free tickets for the showcase are available. Interested individuals can find them through the Skiddle platform.

Milton Keynes City Council’s Family Centres provide a range of services. They offer activities, advice, and support for all ages. Extended support is available for individuals with additional needs.

Further information about the Family Centres can be found on the official Milton Keynes City Council website.
