A new initiative is providing Milton Keynes’ young residents with chances to explore music creation. The City Council has teamed up with Bucks-based organisation On the Decks to launch a programme focused on DJing and music production.
This collaboration, which started earlier in the year, has already seen On the Decks host free sessions at various City Council Family Centres. These sessions offer young people direct experience with professional DJ equipment.
Experienced tutors guide participants through creative challenges and music-based activities. The goal is to help young people develop new skills, boost their confidence, and find avenues for self-expression through music.
Supporting All Young People
A key feature of the programme is its inclusivity. Sessions are designed to be accessible for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Activities can be tailored to individual requirements and presented in manageable steps. The hands-on, visual nature of DJing allows for diverse engagement through sound, movement, and technology.
Expanding Local Access
Currently, On the Decks is running free weekly after-school clubs. These take place at the City Council’s Saplings, Hedgerows, and Hummingbird Family Centres.
Future plans include expanding the programme to offer assemblies and workshops in Milton Keynes schools. Music production programmes are also being developed for educational settings across the city.
On the Decks is recognised as a ‘Safe Practice Mark’ accredited organisation by the city council.
