Milton Keynes children explore basketball and netball

Young children in Milton Keynes are set to benefit from a new sports initiative. The programme, called Nutri Hoops & Nutri Netters, aims to introduce basketball and netball to very young participants.

Early introduction to sport

This five-week offering is specifically designed for children aged one to six years. It is being delivered by the 5 On It Foundation in collaboration with Nutri Troops. The sessions are scheduled to take place at Oakgrove School Community Hall.

The programme begins on Saturday, October 3rd. It will run for five consecutive Saturdays, including October 10th, 17th, 31st, and November 7th. Different time slots cater to specific age groups to ensure age-appropriate activities.

The 1-2 years 5 months age group will have sessions from 9:35 am to 10:10 am. Children aged 2.5 to 3 years 11 months will participate from 10:15 am to 10:50 am. The oldest group, aged 4 to 6 years, will have their sessions from 10:55 am to 11:30 am.

Fun and inclusive activities

Nutri Hoops & Nutri Netters uses a variety of engaging methods to introduce the sports. These include music, bubbles, games, and imaginative play. The programme also features the colourful Nutri Troops characters. The focus is on helping children develop confidence, coordination, and fundamental movement skills through enjoyment.

A key feature of the programme is the encouragement for parents and carers to participate alongside their children. This approach aims to foster a positive environment for families to be active together and build shared experiences.

Peter Bakare, creator of Nutri Troops and a London 2012 Team GB Olympian, highlighted the importance of early positive experiences with physical activity. He stated that the emphasis is on movement, play, and laughter, rather than specific sports skills at this young age.

Community support and accessibility

The introduction of Nutri Hoops & Nutri Netters follows significant interest in previous Nutri Troops activities held in Milton Keynes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to make sports and physical activity accessible and enjoyable for children and their families across the area.

Thanks to support from HORIBA UK, a limited number of fully funded places are available. These are intended for families who might find the cost of children’s activities a barrier to participation. Further details on how to apply for these funded places can be found on the 5 On It website.
